Most bowls are made from raw logs with all their cracks, checks, knots, dark streaks, spalted areas and other "faults". I do not lathe turn anything. I prefer this more rugged and simple artistic approach. Some people might find these bowls to be lacking in finesse or technique. I can assure you that these pieces are no less and might even be more of a sophisticated work of art than those highly polished and symmetrical works done by many others. In my work I have to take into account the living wood, its special character, its weaknesses and strengths as well as the design I might want to impose on it. At a certain point the wood itself may warrant a change in the over all design. Improvisation, creativity, technique, artistic temperament, the medium, as well as the tools themselves may all play a part in the synergistic evolution of the piece. Although all the bowls and spoons are functional, all pieces are unique works of art and are priced accordingly.
