Press or Sheet Caning Press or sheet cane is a manufactured ready made cane product that is "pressed" into a groove on a seat. Old "press back" chairs usually have press seats. Today your metal frame Breuer chairs have press seats. Most press seating has the usual six way pattern but other patterns, notably "closed press", are available. Most press seating starts about $75.00 per chair (seat or back). Please note our special press seat offer at: Special Offer. Rush Seating There are basically two types of rush, Real Rush made of cattail reeds and Fibre Rush, a twisted paper product. Both are wrapped in a figure eight around a chair leaving four triangular shaped areas on the seat. For a simple Fibre Rush seat with no impediments to wrapping the cost is about $7.00 per inch measured across the front of the chair from outside the front leg to outside the front leg. Real Rush cost about $12.00 per inch measured across the front of the chair due to the higher cost of the materials and the incredible difficultly of the process. For Sheraton chairs the back spindled areas has to be removed in order to weave the chair. On Hitchcock chairs the back, side and front pieces have to be removed in order to do the chair. This is an added cost. It should also be noted that there are a few different patterns. These patterns normally cost a bit more to weave. Binders Cane Weave Binders cane is used on porch rockers, rockers, foot stools and benches and on more rustic chairs. It is a cane product approximately 1/4" in width with a hard curved surface like your fingernail. There are two patterns that are predominately used. The basket weave and a twill or herring bone pattern. A simple basket weave on a porch rocker would cost about $6.00 per inch measured from outside the front leg to outside the front leg. A twill weave would cost about $2.50 more per inch. A twill pattern is a much harder weave to follow but it is both a tighter and prettier pattern. It also uses a bit more product to weave. There are other more involved patterns such as zig-zag, concentric diamonds, arrow and others. These patterns normally cost more to weave. It should be noted that binders cane comes in different widths and it naturally cost more to weave a narrower binders cane than a wider binders cane. It is woven in the same type patterns as binders cane, that is either a twill or basket weave. It is used on more outdoor or rustic furniture. Both these patterns would cost about $6.00 to $7.00 per inch to weave. It does not have the longevity of binders cane but works well on Appalachian chairs and other outdoor rustic type chairs. Years ago hand pounded Ash wood splint was used but today that commodity is in very short supply and very costly. Traditionally wrapped on original Shaker chairs in either a basket weave or twill pattern. Normally two color combinations would be used such as black and red, brown and green and so on. Numerous patterns can be created using this product which can give it a more modern look. An average size chair will use about 35 to 40 yards of materials one way and 35 to 40 yards of material the other way costing about $75 to $100 per chair just for materials. Depending on the weave, labor cost are about $75.00 per chair. Shaker tape is a long lasting product but it will fade (as does all fabric) with time.
